Backing up and restoring your server

Backups let you save the current state of your server's files and restore them later - essential before making any risky change.

Creating a backup

1. Log in to the panel and open your server.
2. Go to the Backups tab.
3. Click Create Backup, optionally give it a name, and confirm.
4. Wait for it to finish - larger servers take longer.

Restoring a backup

1. In the Backups tab, find the backup you want to restore.
2. Click the ... menu next to it and choose Restore.
3. Confirm - this will overwrite your current files with the backed-up version, so make sure that's really what you want first.

We'd recommend taking a fresh backup of your current state before restoring an old one, in case you need to undo the restore.

Downloading a backup

Backups can also be downloaded to your own computer from the same menu - useful for keeping an extra copy outside the panel, or moving files elsewhere.

When to take a backup

Get in the habit of taking one before:

• Updating your bot's code or dependencies to a new major version.
• Changing startup variables or the Node.js/Python/Java version.
• Anything you're not 100% sure will work.

Backup limits

Your plan includes a certain number of backup slots and/or total backup storage - if you can't create a new one, delete an old backup you no longer need first, or submit a ticket under Discord Bot Hosting to ask about increasing your allowance.
